Warts are caused by a viral infection called the human papillomavirus (HPV), and there are many different strains. This virus causes keratin, a hard protein in the top layer of the skin to grow too fast.
Warts are very contagious and can be passed on by skin to skin contact, or through contact with towels, shoes or other objects from an infected person. If you have warts, they can also spread to other parts of your body through scratching, shaving or biting your fingernails.
Some warts will only last for a few months, while others can last for several years and recur.
